In the current period, the Favored Sisters are secretly aligned with the Resistance and have a spy network at the Palace to persuade their clients towards social justice and peace. They're detached enough to accept that change may come through violent revolution, or a gradual evolution of attitudes and policies. But, if their covert manipulation was discovered, they would be considered traitors and be imprisoned, possibly executed.

Alpin joined the Favored Sisters partially to escape the gloom of her household after her father, the musical anthropologist, Donorov died in a landslide while exploring their planet's surface. Her father was a wild, charismatic figure, and her mother, an historian, became clingy and unstable after his loss. Yet, Alpin had interior motives too -- her passion for music/dancing and sensuous nature is paired with a desire for radical social change.
